The history of Tohatsu's engine production dates back to 1922 when the research and development of a small gasoline engine began, which was a first in Japan.

Tohatsu engines have been installed in various products such as motorcycles, fishing boats, snow vehicles, fire pumps, and submersible pumps for worldwide markets. In 1956, Tohatsu produced the first outboard motor in Japan, the 'OB-2', an air-cooled 1.5 horsepower machine.

Since then, Tohatsu has steadily increased brand recognition through the development of original marine products such as two-stroke, four-stroke, and TLDI® outboard motors. With 50 years of trusted design and production technologies, Tohatsu strengthens their position as a 'pioneer of outboard motors' by continuing to work toward the development of powerful, low emission engines.

Originally designed for Japanese commercial fishermen, Tohatsu Outboards have been put to the ultimate test for decades - harsh ocean conditions and long days of running for hours at a time.As further testament to Tohatsu’s toughness, our smallest engine, a 2.5 hp, still holds the world record as the smallest outboard ever used to cross the Atlantic Ocean!

How does Tohatsu assure this reliability?

  • Most important is that we never introduce new technology until we are positive that this will consistently work in with quality Tohatsu standards - in other words, will work reliably
  • Each and every engine is tested in a water tank in our own facility before it leaves the factory.Tohatsu is one of the few manufacturers to back its durability claims with a three year limited warranty.

Now we introduce our heralded TLDI ® (Two stroke, Low pressure Direct Injection System), which includes our state-of-the-art air and fuel delivery systems to provide a new generation of outboards.

This results in extraordinary new technology that we’re using in our 50 and 90 hp motors. In fact, all of our 4- stroke and TLDI ®models comply with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)2006 and California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations through 2007 (2-star rating).
